Working together to find solutions

The Workforce Planning Board carries out a number of partnerships, or activities, each year to address local labour force issues.

These partnerships include:

  • Workforce development initiatives
  • Providing information on potential careers
  • Grand Erie Local Immigration Partnership
  • Programs that promote workplace learning for students


2013-14 Partnerships

Spotlight on Health Care

A "spotlight" on health care and health-care careers. Project will help inform Employment Ontario service providers about the occupational, educational and skill demands in today's health-care professions. Will include a concise guide on top careers in local health care.

Literacy Resources for Apprentices

Resources will be developed to help apprentices be successful in completing the academic portion of their apprenticeships. Brochures will identify what resources are available in the community, including literacy organizations, to help them be successful.

Manufacturing Workforce Development Strategy

A detailed look at the changing skill levels and occupations in local manufacturing. Study will look at what entry, or low-skill, occupations have or are disappearing. It will also identify emerging skill needs of businesses, and what supports are available for new and existing staff to develop the required skills.

EmployerOne Survey

EmployerOne Survey is an employer survey that will focus on occupational growth, decline, skill shortages, recruitment methods and other issues. Employers will be invited to participate in the survey once a year, with the results to be shared among community and economic development agencies.

Education Works Alliance

An ongoing project to build educational attainment and encourage Grand Erie residents to use education and training to improve their employability, while also boosting community prosperity. Completion and launch of new website tool for residents to explore their educational and training pathways. This project is in the second year of its funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Grand Erie Immigration Partnership

Work continues to ensure Grand Erie continues to become and is recognized as a welcoming community for newcomers.

 


 

2012-13 Partnerships

Grand Erie Food Manufacturing Study

A study of Grand Erie's $1-billion food manufacturing industry. Includes a report on the industry's impact, labour force needs and challenges, and opportunities for growth, especially for job seekers. Includes a wage & benefit survey based on intereviews with local food companies. Also includes a 4-page career guide.

Think Safety!

A workshop aimed at frontline staff at Employment Ontario service providers to bring them up-to-date information on what kinds of health & safety training/requirements their clients may face in the workplace. Provides EO service provider staff with easy-to-use resources on H & S information.

Youth Employment & Entrepreneurship Strategy

Developing a strategy to encourage youth employment & entrepreneurship across Grand Erie. Strategy and recommendations based on consultations with young workers and with employers. Strategy designed, in part, to help retain educated young workes and entrepreneurs to they can help build a vibrant local economy.

Tourism and Customer Service Strategy

Strategy included a workshop on how tourism operators and small businesses can provide exceptional customer service to retain and gain customers. A Customer Service Handbook was published aimed at small businesses. Meanwhile, a career guide was developed and posted to our website called Hospitality & Tourism: Careers to Discover! Tourism is a growth industry in Grand Erie.

Education Works Alliance

An ongoing strategy to encourage adults in Grand Erie to use education and training opportunities to boost their employability and build community prosperity. Ontario Trillium Foundation funding allows this initiative to continue and grow. A second Education Works Champions newspaper section, profiliing local education heroes, was published. Work started on developing an online portal for individuals to discover education and training pathways.

Grand Erie Immigration Partnership

Work is ongoing to help ensure Grand Erie becomes a welcoming community for newcomers. Work includes an employment guide for newcomers.
