The Workforce Planning Board carries out a number of partnerships, or activities, each year to address local labour force issues.

These partnerships include:

  • Workforce development initiatives
  • Mentoring Skilled Newcomers program
  • Grand Erie Local Immigration Partnership
  • Programs that promote workplace learning for students


2011-12 Partnerships

Education Works

The Education Works Alliance is a new community body that will spearhead initiatives and strategies to raise the educational attainment levels of Grand Erie's adult working population.

Building Better Business in Norfolk

A one-day forum for small and medium sized businesses to be held Oct. 20, 2011 as part of Small Business Week.

Healthy Work-Life Balance Initiative

A strategy to introduce employers to local resources and services to help them assist employees develop a healthy work-life balance.

Human Resource Planning Series

A series of four human resource breakfast seminars. Topics include attraction and retention, and apprenticeship training and tax credits.

Grand Erie Immigrant Employment Cooperative

Year 2 of program to assist newcomers obtain exposure to the Canadian workplace and strengthen their civic engagement within the community. Includes the Mentoring Skilled Newcomers program.

Local Immigration Partnership

Developing a strategy to make Grand Erie communities welcoming to newcomers. Partnership is endorsed and supported by the City of Brantford; Brant, Norfolk and Haldimand counties; and YMCA Immigrant Settlement Services.

Passport to Prosperity

A number of programs to engage local employers and educators to provide workplace learning opportunities for students in Grades 7 to 12.

Grand River School College Work Initiative

Activities to introduce students in Grades 7 to 12 to education pathways.

Education-A Community Responsibility

A community taskforce comprised of political and community leaders, workforce service providers, literacy, school boards, and employers will develop a strategic plan that addresses secondary school completion rates, access to continuing education, literacy levels and culture of learning

Green Jobs in Grand Erie, Hamilton & Niagara Economic Region

Wondering what the "green" industry really is?  This project will profile the key industries and occupations identified as part of the "green" economy for the economic region of Grand Erie/Niagara/Hamilton.

Feasibility Study for Local Labour Market Information (LMI)

A sustainable, integrated local LMI system that enables job seekers, employers, educators, and economic and support organizations to access and utilize current LMI to inform decisions.

LostMyJob

The 3rd phase of the LostMyJob strategy.  Following the successful development of the LostMyJob information kit for laid off workers, and the creation of www.lostmyjob.ca, this communications and outreach campaign will focus on reaching laid-off workers who are not connected with employment and community services with information to help them through the emotional, financial, and social impacts of job loss.

Manufacturing Training Analysis

Employer interviews will be conducted in 3 key manufacturing sectors (Plastics & Rubber Manufacturing, Machinery Manufacturing, and Fabricated Metals) to identify resources available for training current employees, and how training dollars are used, promoted and distributed amongst their workforce.

Occupational Profile Framework

Working in partnership with local boards across the province, WPBGE will develop occupational profiles for the following industry sectors:  manufacturing; professional, scientific and technical occupations; food service and drinking places; and truck transportation.

Grand Erie Immigrant Employment Cooperative

Funded by Citizenship & Immigration -- Multiculturalism Program, this two-year project will assist new Canadians by building community relations between services, employers, and newcomers.  A mentoring partnership matching local business and newcomers will be a primary focus of the program.

Agri-Business: labour Market Analysis for Brant, Norfolk, Elgin, Oxford, Middlesex

This five county labour market analysis will examine labour force conditions of farm operators, agricultural service providers, and commodity processors in the sand plain (tobacco) region.  The study will examine industry and occupational changes, labour force characteristics, as well as identifying value-added opportunities for economic and business development.

Passport to Prosperity

Projects include: Employer Registry campaign, Males in Human Services Conference, way to Work for students entering the world of work, Skilled Trades Conference, Connections - linking Professional, Scientific and Technical employers to local students entering into related careers.

Workforce Focus

Workforce Focus is a bi-monthly insight into the labour market.  Pertinent issues to community stakeholders are highlighted by statistic evidence publication excerpts, and communications with local participants.  Topics relate to local demographic change, sector profiles, and interest group trends.
